Did you know that in Brazil we don’t celebrate Valetine’s day?
Instead, we celebrate Dia dos namorados, every June 12; the celebration itself is a little different though, just as its history.
I always wondered why we didn’t share the same date to “celebrate love” and then, after experiencing VDay here in the U.S., I came to the realization that these two days are very different.
Brazilians will commonly try to explain Dia dos namorados as Brazilian Valentine’s Day, but that’s not really true. Historically, Valentine’s Day shows indications that its traditions started in Rome with a festival called Lupercalia, that celebrated fertility and happened between Feb 13-15. “Unlike Valentine’s Day, however, Lupercalia was a bloody, violent and sexually-charged celebration awash with animal sacrifice, random matchmaking and coupling in the hopes of warding off evil spirits and infertility.” In the 5th century, the pagan celebration was eliminated and Pope Gelasius declared February 14 a day to celebrate Saint Valentin, known as patron of lovers.
Dia dos Namorados doesn’t go too far in History. It’s origin was in 1949 when an advertising/marketing man came up with the idea of creating a day to celebrate love in Brazil. Since Brazil had strong believes in Saint Anthony as a “marriage saint” (yes, people will pray to him to find a husband/wife), they decided to do on Saint Anthony’s Day’s eve, and it worked.
When it comes to celebration, they’re still somewhat different. Even though both of them are a celebration of love, Valentine’s Day is celebrated by everyone, it is genuinely a celebration of love itself, where you show your feelings and how much you appreciate everybody in your life, friends, family, significant other, teachers, etc. In Brazil, however, Dia dos Namorados is only celebrated between two people exclusively, as a couple. I don’t remember getting cards or candies from friends and teachers, because that’s not how it works in Brazil. In Brazil, this day was created exclusively to boost sales, and as bad it sounds, I’m still glad they created it, who doesn’t like having extra attention every now and then?
8 anos de nós dois que agora somos cinco.
Obrigada por todos os momentos e por ser exatamente como você é.
Esse com certeza é o nosso melhor aniversário de namoro/dia dos namorados.
Esse ano nossa família se completa.
